FABIAN BY DAY, DARKOOM INTERROGATOR BY NIGHT. I’M NOT YOUR AVERAGE PHOTOGRAPER! MUAHAHAHAAA!!!

What you have witnessed is a series of photographic artifacts investigating concepts of self-portraiture. Decoction - the title given to this body of work, is light sensitive photo paper interrogated in torturous ways. By burning, scratching, peeling and numerous other techniques, I force the paper to reveal its secrets - extracting new information about itself. Decoction captures other things than light. It requires deciphering like an ancient artifact. It records and continues to record what’s in front of it. Decoction is a collection of experiences mediated by moments of the subconscious: embracing chance, relinquishing control, letting the paper take its course — exploring what else photography can do. Decoction exploits rudimentary concepts of photography by recording time, constantly changing. The paper rejects its default settings. Decoction expresses actions, thoughts, feelings. Residual fingerprints and bodily fluids tell the story of who and how. Decoction challenges notions of photography by encountering what else it has to hide.
